Typical xeromorphic leaf of a grass Sclerenchyma predominates Leaves are rolled Cross-section of rolled (involuted) epistomatous leaf of a xerophyte, beach grass (Ammophila arenaria). Characteristic of this species is its sclerophylly, i.e. the formation of tough leaves with a high proportion of sclerenchyma. Note the numerous crypts on the inner side of the leaf protected from the direct contact with the dry air. Compare the leaf anatomy of mesophytic grasses in the unit "The Leaf: Basic Organization." Identify sclerenchyma, mesophyll, crypts, major and minor veins, xylem and phloem, and bundle sheaths. |
